CELEB DYK : Meghan Markle

Our Celebrity Did You Know posts will spotlight influencers in the arts, sports, entertainment, and business worlds who are using their fame to do good for their community, country, and the world.

We begin, with Meghan Markle and her work with World Vision.

Known for her role on the USA Network hit show Suits, Meghan Markle recently embarked on a 5 day journey to India with the international charity World Vision. Meghan’s mission was to “learn about issues affecting women and young girls in slum communities and engage in candid discussions centering on education, hygiene, empowerment, economic development and health care.”

According to Us Weekly, “Meghan had been planning this [for the past eight months], compiling her own research and helping set the agenda for the trip. She didn’t want to be given notes by someone else and just show up. These are important areas of interest for Meghan and cover issues she feels extremely passionate about.”

Before her mission to India, Meghan also worked with World Vision in Rwanda on a mission to see the impact clean water has on children and communities. While there, Meghan taught students how to paint with watercolor paints. Upon returning to Canada, Meghan hosted The Watercolor Project event and ended up raising $15,000 to help World Vision build a new water source for an entire community!

“I think there’s a misconception that access to clean water is just about clean drinking water; which, of course, it is but it’s so much more than that. Access to clean water in a community keeps young girls in school, because they aren’t walking hours each day to source water for their families. It allows women to invest in their own businesses and community. It promotes grassroots leadership, and, of course, it reinforces the health and wellness of children and adults. Every single piece of it is so interconnected, and clean water, this one life source, is the key to it all.”

On top of her work with World Vision, Meghan is also a United Nations Women’s Advocate for political participation and leadership.
